If I could stop and review the contents of my words I would know. Sigh, someone needs to invent an electronic interview editor.

My daughter wanted an American Girl doll bunk bed, but it was not only $180, it was also an ugly green. So, I made one instead. In her favorite color - neon pink - and patterns - zebra and birds. I found an unfinished bunk bed, that also breaks down into two single beds, on eBay and an unfinished doll armoire at the local Goodwill.

My son helped me paint. My daughter loves it.

Hey all, I'm teaching a class on how to crochet flowers at Serial Knitters next Thursday, Sept. 30th, from 6:30 - 8:30. I would love for you to join me.

Crocheted flowers are quick and fun to make. In this class, you will learn how to make several types of crocheted flowers. We'll start with a simple one-layered flower, then add on to make a blossoming three-layered flower. We'll also learn how to stitch up a flower that is inspired by the chrysanthemum or lily. Take your skills beyond the basics and learn tips and tricks to working in the round, how to read a flower crochet chart, and how to join flowers together. When we've had our fill of stitching flowers, we'll explore the many uses for crocheted flowers and you'll see how to put together a cute flowering head band. To slouch or not to slouch, I think that was the question. With this pattern, you decide how much slouch you want your hat to have. If you say, “No way, José!” then go ahead and choose the Slouch-less option. If it’s “Like totally slouchy, to the max!” then check out the Super Slouchy option. For the rest of you who think that a little goes a long way, the Slightly Slouchy option is probably best for you.

The Slouch-less option gives you a lacy hat with a close fit from crown to brim.
The Slightly Slouchy option offers a comfortable hat with a longer, slightly looser fit in the crown and body, tapering to fit your head size at the brim.
The Super Slouchy option allows you to create a hat that is roomy in the crown and body, but still sized to fit you at the brim.

Seal Rock Vacation

Watch out, kids, the Holetz family went camping this week. We went to beautiful Seal Rock Campground in the Olympic National Park on the Hood Canal. Photos say it best.

The Truth Behind Derby Tights and Knee-Hi's

Amy says I've been quiet on the blogfront lately. Amy says I should talk about derby. I do what Amy says.

So, what is up with the iconic roller derby tights and knee-hi's? Are they edgy, cool, and sexy? Yes, they are. But, they are also a practical tool in the modern roller girls arsenal.

The first day I went to a derby practice I didn't want to come off looking like a roller derby poseur, so I wore black shorts, a black tee, and some subdued knee-hi's, like so,

Notice that Jackie, the more experienced derby girl next to me, is wearing tights? That's because she knows about "rink rash", or "track rash". Rink rash is the red burn you get, usually on your hip or buttocks, after falling on the track. Rink rash usually looks like this. Now, if you fall and you're just wearing fishnets, you'll end up with a pretty little pattern to your burn, like this. Tights offer a layer of protection that helps minimize the rink rash; you can even wear them under your fishnets. After my first taste of rink rash, I learned to wear tights pretty quick. Next time I'll be sure to share a photo.

With an unexpected burst of creative energy last week, I designed a new hat pattern with customizable options. The Seattle Slouch Hat

Crochet goes seismic! This class will show you how to take your basic crochet skills to the next level while making a unique hat that will impress your friends and family. Worked from the top down, the Seismic Hat will help students learn a variety of skills, including how to work in the round, making an adjustable ring, how to make crochet stitches of varying height, shaping, and how to work into different parts of the stitch. The pot holders need to measure between 7 and 8 inches across and must be double thick. Do the pattern twice and join at the edge (back side can be plain). Pot holders need to be functional so this is an important requirement - if pot holders are not double thick you won’t be included in the swap. A tighter gauge is also helpful.

Yarn Requirements:
For this swap please only use cotton yarn! No blends. If you have questions please ask, we have plenty of suggestions for appropriate yarn.

Labeling
Please use the provided labels (available at Village Yarn & Tea). Please have them labeled before 11 a.m. on the day of the swap. Details we would like you to provide include care instructions and your name. Additional details would be the yarn and pattern information.

Ahh, here you are. Welcome to the next stop on Amy O'Neill Houck's Crochet for Bears to Wear
blog tour. Won't you sit and have a cuppa joe?

If you've been following Amy on her tour, you may have already heard about the stylish offerings this book presents to the fashion conscious teddy. There are garments and accessories for all seasons, from beach wear and evening wear to back-to-school necessities and cozy sweaters. I love them all, but the thing that I love the most about this book is that each pattern is customizable! Throughout the book, Amy guides you on how to measure your pint-sized companion and adapt each pattern for dolls and teddies of varying sizes, including 18" dolls.

This is perfect for me because, while my daughter does have quite a few bears on her shelf, her BFF at home is an American Girl Doll named Lilly. So, I was thrilled to get a copy of Crochet for Bears to Wear
and its companion Knits for Bears to Wear.

Lilly agreed to be a model as long as she had say in which pattern I made for her. She liked the Bear-y Pickin' Dress but wanted it to be more of a hip length top. She also decided that the sleeves were a little too frilly and didn't suit her style. Since she's a very busy girl, I had to snap a quick photo of her in the top as she skated off to school.

Here's Lilly, aka Smackie O., not long after she joined a local roller derby team.

Not only am I looking forward to making more fun projects for Lilly, I think this book will be a great way for my daughter to get beyond crocheted chain bookmarks and bracelets.

Mater Matrix Mother Workshop in Kent!

Mater Matrix Mother is the epic crocheted public art project by installation artist Mandy Greer. A glowing blue river of crocheted yarn and recycled fabrics, built my communities, then literally woven into the trees. It was originally installed at Camp Long in Seattle, WA during the summer of 2009, but has since been on tour across the country.

Mandy held workshops leading up to the installation so people could gather as a community to learn to crochet and share in the installation by adding their own work. Now Mandy is holding a few workshops to help rebuild the installation as it weathers new environments and the effects of travel.

Not sure how I can make it but I am going to try.

Somehow I will have to help husband tow a big pile of scrap lumber from the fence raising last weekend and a broken dryer to the city recycling event in Redmond, WA, go to my first roller derby practice with PFM (that's potential fresh meat) league in Ballard, WA, and hit the crochet workshop in Kent, WA. All between 10 and 4 on Saturday. It might happen if I could fly.

My husband and his BFF, Gordon of mightywombat.com, have this podcast thang that they've been doing for the last few years. This year they decided to try their hands at producing and promoting a film festival right here in Redmond, WA.

My husband, Steve, was an event coordinator in his past life, so it has been very exciting to watch him work his magic as they coordinate films and local sponsorships.

And finally, I can link to the very cool poster they commissioned from local artist Jorge Meneses. Hopefully, we'll get to see some of you there!

Creating Patterns using your computer

Have you heard? Amy O'Neill Houck and I have squares on the brain. Granny squares! Lately, I find myself thinking of squares while skating along the river and I think of them at night while on my way to sleep. At first, I tried outlining patterns of squares in Excel and I tried sketching them on paper, but I felt like I wasn't seeing how the pattern would really work out once I put all of those squares together. So, I figured that I could either crochet up a heck load of squares then arrange them into different patterns or I could just stitch up a few then work the magic on my computer. By taking just one photo of each square I could map out a bunch of patterns and work out my color scheme at the same time. I showed Amy and she said that I should blog about it. So here it is.

I started with a few squares, they can be squares of solid colors or a combination of colors. You can use a standard square, like I did, or a traditional granny square or you could even try this fun technique with almost any shape, including hexagons and triangles.

To start, take a photo of each color motif and then upload them to the computer. Next, copy and paste them into MS Word, Adobe Illustrator, or almost any photo or paint program. In this example, I used Adobe Illustrator, but I've used Word just as successfully.

Here are 3 solid colored squares. You don't need to be fussy or perfect, this is just a "sketch" on your computer.

Once you have your basic motifs in your program, start copying and pasting each color and move them around into different patterns. Here are a few patterns that I came up with:

Next, I took 1/4th of the original image above and copied and pasted over and over to create this design. I think it might need a full border of purple squares as a frame.

I bought a brick house off of Craigslist the other day. A brick doll house, that is. I've been looking for a doll house for my daughter (and I) to play with for awhile, so when this old, handmade, slightly beat up house came up, I jumped on it. Here is the behemoth that takes up a 448 sq. inch footprint in my living room (the cat did not come with the house).
It was (supposedly) built in the 70's. Not so sure about that, but it is old and weathered. It has the four rooms you see in the photo above. There are 2 more rooms in the front of the house that are accessed by an opening on each side of the house (one side has a hinged wall). There's also an entryway with a staircase.
The kids each picked one of the top bedrooms to redecorate. I'm working on the bathroom (center behind the stairs) and kitchen (unseen). I also just had a brilliant idea this morning. I think the large room (below the top rooms) will become a yarn shoppe! Excited about that. Will need to figure out the shelving units. Mini baskets of yarn. I'll need a cash register. Chandeliers, because all yarn shoppes should have chandeliers.
Here is what we've done so far. Thad's room (blue) still needs more base board trim and a neater touch up on the windows. Ally's pink room is still a work in progress. The vaulted ceiling portion will be white.

I've learned so many tips and tricks about redecorating a doll house. Like using scrap booking paper covered in laminate contact paper for flooring. Crystal beads on earring findings can be turned into a crystal chandelier. And you can take apart the old furniture by heating it up in the oven, or with a hair dryer, to make the glue melt a little. I'm taking apart an old hutch that came with the house to make more contemporary shelving units. Ally is recovering a depression era couch in red, sparkly vinyl fabric.
Stay tuned. I can't allow this to take over my life, but it's just too much fun.

Here's a little sneaky peek of a pattern I have coming out in the next issue of Inside Crochet.
This is one of those patterns where I started with something totally different in mind. As I worked the project, I just wasn't feeling the designing mojo, or as my friend Shannon of Shibaguyz says, the Crochet Fu. And when I'm not feeling the mojo, I lose focus and interest and the yarn begins to gather dust under the couch. Unless I have a new idea. Which I did, and this quick little project was born. Stay tuned.

At my kids school, you can give other people compliments - teachers to kids, kids to kids, kids to administrators, etc. My kids seem to like them, not only because they get put into a raffle for prizes, but because it helps them get recognized in a sea of 450 other children.

So, I decided to work up a Holetz Compliment for the family to make sure that there are recognitions for good things along with the usual reprimands for not so good things.

It's been working great. Sometimes, the kids have to remind me by asking if they deserved a Holetz Compliment for something they did, but that lets me know that they value the appreciation. Hey! I even get one sometimes (usually for allowing more dessert than usual).

Recently, my 7 year old son got one for being patient and helpful during a Girl Scout meeting. Totally had to recognize that one in the attempt for a repeat at the next meeting. My 10 year old daughter got one for jumping in to help (without being asked) when the bathroom flooded one evening.

If you have other ideas to show appreciation, I'd love to hear them. If you like this idea, here's our compliment that you can adapt for yourself. It's set up for 4 to a page.

Soon I'll be posting the Babydoll Tunic pattern for sale on my Ravelry page. This top was first published in Inside Crochet last May. I designed this top for people, like me, who have a longer torso and find that most store bought tops are just too dang short. No worries, though, if you don't have the same issue. The bottom section of the top is worked from the waist down, so it's easy to work to a length that suits you. When I envisioned how it would be worn, I saw it layered over a another top like I show it here, so I'm excited to get this out there and see what people think.

Do you know what's cool? Josi and I wanted a certain pattern to help round out our pattern offerings in the Cinnamon issue of Tension Magazine. So, I put out a call and the super talented Annette Petavy answered. As for the yarn, we wanted something really soft and squishy and luxurious. So I put out a call and the super talented Brianna Mewborn answered.

Of course, Annette is in France and it would've been silly to send the yarn all the way there only to have her send it back for photography - it probably wouldn't have made it on time, anyway. So instead, Brianna sent the yarn to me. I swatched it and sent Annette my stitch gauge. Annette designed the pattern according to my gauge and now I'm crocheting the sample.

The pattern is beautiful, the yarn is gorgeous and really I didn't have to do anything but crochet while sipping tea and nibbling Trader Joe's Mini Gingerbread Men. Oh yes, life is good.

Denise Interchangeable Hook Set

Okay, I'm hooked. I am admittedly snobbish about many things, food, yarn, and hooks included. So, I was kinda dubious about the Denise Interchangeable Crochet hooks being made of plastic, but when I finally got over my snobbery and gave them a proper test drive, I was surprised by how smoothly they glided through the stitches.

So, I ask myself, why don't I like plastic?

*Plastic hooks drag through the stitches compared to steel or aluminum
*Sometimes plastic hooks have a seam that gets caught up in fibers
*Plastic is too lightweight, which puts off my rhythm.

I was surprised that the Denise hooks were speedy quick, no seam, and the lightweight part isn't even a factor in the larger sizes (although, a little light in the small sizes for my taste), plus the versatility of being able to do Tunisian in any size hook and in any cable length I want is a huge plus as a designer. Long gone are the days when I will have to search the nets looking for a 3.75 mm Tunisian hook in any length. And, instead of having to deal with an unwieldy 14" aluminum hook that whacks my poor 7 year old son in the head as he tries to snuggle up to me, my fabric hangs off a super flexible cord that I can adjust to any size I need.

So, my only snobby complaint? They're gray. As soon as I become the rock star of crochet that I am destined to be, I will demand the SkaMama licensed set of Denise Interchangeable Hooks, where each hook is a different color: fuschia, tangerine, blueberry, lime, grape, lemon yellow, even green with pink polka dots, or zebra stripes. That's right, baby, you just wait. That day will come. In the meantime, I need to get me the compatible Interchangeable Knit Set. Bistitchual stitchers will rule the world.

I am so excited to be in the groove for the next issue of Tension Magazine. I think the rush of partly owning the whole process of publishing an online magazine, from concept to publication, has ignited some of my more creative ideas. I have two designs in the next issue and I love them both!

Speaking of designs, if you are interested in submitting a pattern to Tension, we are taking submissions for our Spring and Summer publications as follows:

In addition to seasonally appropriate modern and funky fashions and accessories, we are always looking for home decor (pillows, rugs, and wall art), jewelry (using fiber, wire or resin), and bags.

Patterns may be written for crochet or knit, or a combination of the two. Elements may also include sewing, embroidery, or other needle arts. We are particularly interested in projects that feature new ideas in construction, finishing, and embellishments.

Ally's first concert was to see The Creepshow in Seattle last night. Sarah Sin, the singer, was so cool to her; she signed Ally's pink guitar strap and gave her a signed guitar pick. Ally came home with a bunch of buttons and stickers given to her by all of the bands that played last night. Great show for a first concert!

Some people post breathtakingly beautiful photos of the view from their kitchen. Views that are perfect and orderly with flowering gardens beyond the window. Here's my view from the couch where I do all of my work, editing, writing, or stitching. Note the broken section of the blinds where the cats like to sit when the blinds are down. The rock band instruments left over from our intimate soiree, when a few friends came to play Halloween themed songs and view the horror flick Trick R Treat. And the Halloween lawn decorations we haven't put out yet because it's been too rainy and windy. Also note that the lights are turned on, even though it's almost noon, because it's so cloudy and gray. That's my view. I'd love to see the view from your workspace. My newest pattern, an embroidered fulled backpack in Inside Crochet. It's currently only available by ordering from the UK, but should be available digitally on Yudu soon.

Backpack body and flap are crocheted in one piece. The straps are crocheted and felted separately then sewn on. The backpack also features a drawstring closure, woven through inset grommets, and a magnetic snap closure. I've been busy on the 2nd edition of a popular crochet book, so my family went to see Ponyo a couple of weeks ago on their own.

When they came home they brought me dinner. I guess the movie had a recipe for a noodle soup. So they stopped at Uwajimaya, a local Asian food store, and picked up the ingredients. It was soooo yum. Figs

Why is it that so many do not like figs? I spent the earlier years of my life in San Diego where we had a fig tree in the back yard. In fact, many of our neighbors had fig trees and all of the figs would taste different depending on the tree. I loved them all and still do. I like figs best when they come right off of the tree, but I also like them dried and I love fig newtons.

In an unofficial poll of my immediate family, 2 out of 6 people like figs in their natural state. One of the people who doesn't like them fresh off the tree does like them dried.

I must start blogging more often, so:

1. Cocoa, the first mini issue of Tension, is coming up fast. We are wrapping things up and Josi is madly coding, stitching, and photo editing all at the same time; she is a power house, people. I will have a recipe, a pattern or two, and an interview. We will also be announcing a fabulous giveaway shortly! Follow us on twitter, Ravelry, or Facebook to keep up to date.

2. I have to make exercise a habit again. That experiment I did, where I didn't exercise and ate anything I wanted to eat, just didn't work out so great for my waistline. So, I set a 21 day goal of Jazzercise. Supposedly, it takes 21 times to make a habit (no clue where I heard that). The idea is that once I get to 21 Jazzercize (is it a z or an s?) classes my habit will be established. Today was day 11. I thought about a maple bar doughnut while doing crunches.

3. Tomorrow is my son's 7th birthday. This is shocking to me.

Has anyone seen Landlust, a garden/craft/food/country life magazine from Germany?

My mom is from Bavaria, where the rest of her family still resides. Her sister, Christl* sent her a few issues of Landlust, which features country life but appears to be marketed to city dwellers. There are articles on gardening and cooking, nature, and crafts. The most recent issue featured articles on how to make felted garden ornaments, chair pads, and vases. Another issue had a section on making unique jewelry using leather cord and another featured an article on wools and tweeds. There are features on raising geese, how to play classic children's games, and how to make a spider web viewing frame. Even though I can't read 93% of the magazine, the photos are fantastic and really inspiring. I came away with a few ideas for new projects.

I wish it was available digitally. I think I'll write them.

* Christl is older but she looks and acts exactly like my mother, which is eerie as they've only seen each other 3 or 4 times in the last 20 years. My mom is jealous of her sister, though, because Christl's hair went totally white really early in life. My mom wants totally white hair.

Recycled Doll furniture

We've been looking at possibly buying or building a doll houses lately and I found this book called Green Dollhouse, which showcases environmentally friendly doll house entries from The Green Dollhouse Competition in CA a few years ago. While looking at buying doll house furniture, most of which is too expensive and not my taste, I thought about ways to create doll house furniture from recycled materials. Here is my first shot.

The chairs with the orange pillow and footstool are made from an egg carton. The larger chair is made from a toilet paper tube.

It was a lot of fun and you find yourself looking at the materials you put in the recycling bin in a new way. I also painted a toothpaste cap for a vase, not pictured.

As we near record breaking temps in the PNW, the family is having a good time figuring out ways to stay cool. My 10 year old experimented with containers of yogurt and it was a wonderfully cool treat.

Simply stick a popsicle into a container of yogurt, with or without the lid, and freeze. The wide mouth containers work better than the narrower Yoplait style.

Also, check out my new lid! I've been looking for a head to take hat photos on and found this recycled glass head at Pier 1 Imports. It works very well at a standard head size. Can't show the hat it's wearing yet as it is scheduled for a book project I'm working on.

IWP's Crocheted Gifts, by Kim Werker is hitting stores now. Not only was I the technical editor for the book, I also contributed the Sisal Pinwheel Rug. I used a large spool (about 2200 feet) of sisal bundling twine that I found at the home improvement store. This project was really fun to make and quick to work up on a big hook, but I give tips on how to work with sisal in the book. As you're working you'll notice that your project is a little stiff, but you'll be surprised by the change in drape once you block it.

There is so much to tell you about, TNNA Columbus (I met Doris Chan *snoopy dance*), Getting Loopy Show (uh, I was late), the new project (got Tension?), fascinating discussions here and here (why, crocheters, why?), and jury duty (booorrring!).

First, things first.

DID YOU SEE IT? I have an article in Interweave Crochet Summer '09! Crochet Around Seattle, by Julie Armstrong Holetz. That's me crocheting at my local coffee shop, Victors Celtic Coffee. Samantha Roshak, fab designer and blogger, took the photo for me. Ignore the hair, it's been cut and colored since then. If you didn't see it, check it out, and let me know what you thought. Locals, what did I miss (providing links, if possible) in this great city of ours?

Other items to note in the new issue:
Julia Vaconsin does it again with the beautiful cover project! (thanks for letting borrow your flickr photo).
Doris Chan has two fab projects that use big, big hooks to make lacy accessories for you and your home.
Robyn's intuitive color sense comes out in a cheerful tunic and a set of motif jewelry that is perfect for summer.
And lots of lace projects! That was the number one theme at TNNA Columbus. Lace weight fibers and projects are all the rage.

Now, inspired by my own article, I'm dragging the kids to Kinokuniya Bookstore in downtown Seattle and then we'll hit Salumi for lunch (owned by Mario Batali's dad).

New Pattern! The Seaside Beret

The lacey stitch pattern, in this perky beret, reminds me of the starfish I see while beach combing the tide pools of Discovery Park in Seattle. The stitch pattern has just enough complexity to keep you entertained but not enough to be considered difficult. Worked in organic fingering weight wool, the beret will keep your head warm, but it can also be worked in light weight cotton for the warmer summer months.

Oh yeah! I have a blog. Sigh. Dear Blogger, sorry for the neglect but you see Facebook and Twitter lured me away with their smooth talkin' one liners.

I do have lots to share though. Did anyone see the Baby Doll dress in Inside Crochet?
I'm proud to say that it was my first garment design and I think it came out pretty good. Many tops hit me right at the top of the waistband of my pants. Hate that! So, I designed this top so it would be easy to adjust the length. It actually fits the model a little longer than it does on me, but still looks cute!

Speaking of Inside Crochet, you may have heard by now that the company who offered the magazine digitally on demand suddenly closed its doors without warning. The publisher is working hard to resource a digital supplier and is hoping to have the details ironed out within the next month. So, will let you know what happens with that. I'm sorely disappointed as I thought the digital mag was fabulous.

For those of you in the States, some Barnes and Noble stores offer the magazine for about $9.95, but it usually takes a month or so from publication date to be in the stores. So, call first.

Will post more exciting news in a mo'.

Camp Crafts!

My daughter had to have a tiny bit of surgery this week (she's well and recovering at home now). So, instead of chewing my nails in fret, I kept the hands busy making samples for our Girl Scout Camp trip next week. When someone said "camp" and "craft" of course I thought of plastic lace. And if you give a girl some plastic lace she's going to want to make a lanyard. So, the girls will be making lanyards with a little compass, flashlight, whistle, and magnifying glass to enhance their outdoor experience. We adapted the materials so that Daisy's could make a necklace instead. Below is a simple square weave and a twisted square weave.

My troop is also making SWAPs, which are little pins to swap with other troops at camp.
Hopefully, you can guess what these are.

The pattern in this hat reminds me of my hometown, Los Angeles, which is known for its earthquakes. To create the unique texture you will work the stitches into a loop not normally used in most stitch patterns. It's simple enough for a beginner who is ready to shake things up and move beyond the basic stitches.

Finished size
21” circumference x 8” high, fits 20-23” head size

Materials
Worsted weight wool (CYCA #4 medium), 170 yds
Shown in Cascade 220 (100% wool; 220 yd [200 m]/3 1/2 oz [100 g]): color #9420 teal)
5 mm (H/8) hook, or size needed to obtain gauge
Stitch marker
