Mums the Word
by Julie Armstrong Holetz

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn, about 20 yds MC, for single color flower; several yds per color for multi color flower
Hook: Size I/9 (5.5 mm)
Finished size: 3-inches in diameter
Gauge: 14 sts x 16 rows = 4” square

Abbreviations:
Ch – chain
Sl st – slip stitch
St(s) – stitch(es)
Sc – single crochet
BLO – back loop only
Rnd - round
Rep - repeat

Special notes:
Sometimes you will be directed to work into one loop of the stitch, the front loop or back loop. Looking at the top of your stitches, there are two loops. The front loop of the stitch is the loop that is closest to you. The back loop is the loop that is farthest from you. Unless directed to work into one loop only, assume that you will be working through both loops for the stitch.

For layers of color, simply fasten off the last color worked at the end of a petal rnd. Pushing petals forward, and out of the way, slip stitch the new color in the remaining loop of any stitch from two rounds before. Begin next round. Mum

Pattern:
Ch 4, sl st to first ch to make a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 8 sc over chs and into center of ring, sl st in BLO of first sc to join, turn – 8 sc.

Rnd 2 (petal rnd): Ch 1, working into BLO, sl st in next st, * ch 7, sl st in next st *, rep from * to * 6 more times, ch 7, sl st to first sl st to join, turn – 8 ch-7 loops. Optional: place marker in the FLO of the first stitch to help you identify the remaining loops needed to be worked later.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, working into remaining loop from Rnd 1, push the petals forward and out of the way, 2 sc in each st around, sl st in BLO of first sc to join, turn – 16 sc.

Rnd 4 (petal rnd): Ch 1, working into BLO, sl st in next st, * ch 7, sl st in next st *, rep from * to * 14 more times, ch 7, sl st to first sl st to join, turn – 16 ch-7 loops.

Rnd 5: Ch 1, working into remaining loop from Rnd 3, push the petals forward and out of the way, * sc in next st, 2 sc in next st *, rep from * to * around, sl st in BLO of first sc to join, turn – 24 sc.

Rnd 6 (petal rnd): Ch 1, working into BLO, sl st in next st, * ch 7, sl st in next st *, rep from * to * 22 more times, ch 7, sl st to first sl st to join, turn – 24 ch-7 loops.

Rnd 7: Ch 1, working into remaining loop from Rnd 5, push the petals forward and out of the way, * sc in each of next two sts, 2 sc in next st *, rep from * to * around, sl st to first sc to join, do NOT turn– 32 sc.

Rnd 8 (petal rnd): Ch 1, working into both loops, * ch 7, sl st in next st *, rep from * to * 30 more times, ch 7, sl st to first sl st to join – 32 ch-7 loops.

Fasten off and weave in any ends.

Thanks so much for the Mum pattern. I used it on a pink hat for my daughter-in-law who just under-went breast surgery. Turned out so cute and the hat was a hit!

  6. Thanks for this pattern. I made a gorgeous maroon colored one and placed it on a black open crocheted beanie. Love it! I was wondering if I put the hat on etsy, would you like to be credited for the flower and what would you like it to say?
